Star When?

Can’t “see it again” until I see it once said the wistful new parent to nobody in particular.

The Sound of Silence

Jessica Livingston of Y Combinator on the problems with social media:

I’m horrified at the prospect of the most insightful people in their fields thinking, “That’s something I should comment on. Nah, what’s the point? Too much downside.”

Signaling in Tech Attire, Political Edition

Maciej Ceglowski, who has been hosting Tech Solidarity meetups, on Trump’s December 2016 kiss-the-ring tech meeting:

What I saw there was weakness — weakness, weakness, weakness.... Not only were they weak, but they were afraid… And you know how I know they were afraid was those neckties.

Profound and spot-on observation.

Donald Trump’s Twitter Account Is a Security Disaster Waiting to Happen

Is Twitter still having revenue problems? Of course Twitter is still having revenue problems. If Twitter plans to let Donald Trump continue to tweet – and tweet from an insecure account – they might as well solve their revenue problem by bidding out access to “hack” his account.

More seriously, there is something so odd about Twitter the company flailing about while falling behind yet another social media platform (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat) and yet as a platform they are poised to become the most powerfully scary platform the world has ever seen.

Young Avengers (2013)

file

Late to this, but Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen ‬‪& Jamie McKelvie ‬is amazing. And perhaps most impressively manages not only to carry off its over the top cheesey ending, but to earn it.

The whole series is a fairly tightly constructed 15 issues and apparently The OA is no good so you have plenty of time to read this before the world ends in January and the government bans gay superheros.

To sum up: Billy loves Teddy and so does David, maybe. America loves Billy, but not like that while Hawkeye (Kate, not Clint) just wants to bang the super hot if fairly vapid Marvel Boy. Their parents just don’t understand and neither does Captain America and yet they still find a way to save the world both from and with Loki. Don’t squint too hard and it will all make sense by the end. Promise. Well mostly, it’s still comics.

Highly recommended.

Republican Congressman Celebrates Russian Hacking

I feel like I am taking crazy pills.

On a related theme, see also John Podesta’s Op-Ed at The Washington Post:

Comparing the FBI’s massive response to the overblown email scandal with the seemingly lackadaisical response to the very real Russian plot to subvert a national election shows that something is deeply broken at the FBI.

To wrap-up, password sharing is wrong and against the law.

Going forward in 2017: hacking is good if it hobbles your political opponents and bad if it violates a company’s crappy EULA which no sane person reads.

Maybe Stop Using Your Cuisinart

Silvia Killingsworth dropping holiday-themed knowledge for The Awl:

Anyway, maybe you are reading this thinking, who has a food processor, only people who live in the suburbs and have full-size kitchen cabinets? To which I would reply, yeah, and whose house do you think you’ll be going to for Christmas? Stay safe out there, and maybe skip the rum balls.
